Car Insurance

When buying car insurance, it’s tempting to think all policies are pretty much the same, but you couldn’t be more wrong. The only products that are roughly the same are the 'third party only' policies, yet most people in the UK have either ‘comprehensive’ cover or ‘third party fire and theft’
So, what should you look for to find the differences between your existing policy and any new insurers?

Well, you can look for whether your policy covers all your SatNav equipment, your car Hi Fi, any built-in iPod or a CD changer in the boot. Some policies just offer a tiny modicum of cover on these items and if you are a bit of an entertainment buff, you could be disappointed.

Many policies cover ‘Personal belongings’ in the car, but up to how much? You need to know this, especially if you ever take your car on holiday or drive up to conferences with your laptop in the boot.
Then, what about your medical expenses? If you are in an accident, how much cover does your car insurance cover any treatment, and if you are just a little shaken and it’s your car that needs intensive care, will they pay for you to get home?
Another question is if you have a cracked windscreen, and have to claim for that, will it affect your 'no claims discount'?

If you ever drive abroad you’d better check your cover in Europe, and particularly how long it’s for, as well as finding out whether you need to let the insurance company know if you intend to go over to France on the Ferry.

A lot of people put a lot of weight on whether the insurer supplies you with a courtesy car while yours is being fixed, but you should look further and see what type of courtesy car they do offer and whether you can upgrade this for an extra fee. After all, you may not be able to fit your entire family into a Renault Clio.

Another thing to look for is whether you get a discount for a second car, and if they have a policy for your classic car.

On the subject of discounts and pricing, and yes we are back to that again… you should watch out for whether a company charges for paying by direct debit, or whether they will charge you a penalty if you cancel the policy. A lot of companies now levy charges for all sorts of customer service, so its best to check that before you sign up.
