1. 3 Series
Is there a better car in this class? It would be hard to argue there was, as only the C Class comes close but the 3 series beats everything for the drive, which is taut, compelling, thrilling and stimulating but with a compact exec interior and tons of equipment and refinement. The only issue is that the 3 series is a car world all of it's own, with sporty versions, tourers and fabulous coupe's to choose from. Our favourite is the 320D, mainly because it is all the above but eco friendly with it.

2. The BMW 5 Series
The 5 series is the only direct rival for the E class Mercedes and takes the Merc on in dimensions the Merc does not choose to emphasise. So while the Merc is incredibly refined, the 5 is more sporty, while the E class is beautifully smooth, the 5 is almost as exciting as a 3, just with a larger body. If you had to choose? There isn't a lot in it.

3. BMW Z4 coupe
This is a great sports car. Very lively, fabulous power and brilliant handling. It even sounds good. The M version is an epic! Is it the best in class? Well, it might despite all the above, struggle to beat an Elise on a straight track.
